Montoya Predicts Red Bull’s Fall If Verstappen Walks

Juan Pablo Montoya fears Red Bull may tumble down the grid next year, as Max Verstappen’s future and engine issues loom.

Juan Pablo Montoya believes Red Bull could be facing the start of a decline as early as next year, especially if Max Verstappen decides to leave the team. According to the former F1 driver, the quality of Red Bull’s new engine is another major uncertainty that could push the team down the grid.

“They have an engine for next year that no one really knows anything about yet,” Montoya said, referring to the hybrid V6 developed jointly by Red Bull Powertrains and Ford. “Next season, Red Bull could end up racing where Williams is today.”

Montoya also questioned Verstappen’s potential moves if he were to walk away from Red Bull. “The thing is, McLaren just re-signed Piastri. Would Toto [Wolff] drop Antonelli to make room for Max? Or would he part ways with George [Russell]?”

“I don’t know if the path is that clear. Honestly, if Max were to join Mercedes, whoever loses their seat there would probably end up at Red Bull. If you had to make a decision tomorrow, would you get rid of George?”

“George has been a Mercedes guy for a long time. It is not like all the attention is only on Antonelli. And Antonelli has done a fantastic job as a rookie. So the real question is whether you want to pair George with Max.”

“Would you rather pair Max with Antonelli? Or do you decide to keep your lineup as it is and pass on Max? That is a real possibility. I know Toto was desperate to get Max last year. Is he still willing to do whatever it takes this time around? I am not so sure.”
