Contract nuances may allow Ricciardo to step into Perez’s shoes as their F1 futures hang in balance.
In this “silly season” of driver transfers, which constantly shifts in an exhilarating manner, Daniel Ricciardo has suddenly re-entered the fray for one of the most coveted seats in Formula 1.
Red Bull’s team principal, Christian Horner, defended the decision at Silverstone yesterday, stating it was “perfectly logical to sign Checo at that time”, but he conceded his disappointment with the Mexican’s recent performances, hinting that performance clauses are currently not being met.
Horner even acknowledged that as the pack edges closer to Red Bull, with McLaren possibly already having the fastest car in 2024, the team he leads is in desperate need of a competitive driver to partner Max Verstappen.
The paddock is abuzz, and Dr. Helmut Marko has confirmed a rather curious clause for Daniel Ricciardo linked to Perez. Thus, if the Mexican’s contract includes performance clauses, Ricciardo’s contract contains a mirror clause allowing him to move from the RB F1 team to Red Bull Racing.
This is unsurprising, according to him, and Horner confirms that the contracts are necessarily linked because “they are all Red Bull Racing drivers, but some need to evolve at RB F1”.
The timing of when these clauses may be activated remains to be seen. Likely during the summer break, if Marko is to be believed.
“Checo has a few races to prove his worth. He has his ups and downs. This time, he seems better here. Maybe he just needs one session a day to boost him (Hadjar was driving in his place in FP1)! But let’s see where he stands by Sunday.”
“We will know more by the summer break.”
