Franco Colapinto’s F1 future hangs on complex negotiations between Williams and Red Bull, with Carlos Slim’s support also in play.
Franco Colapinto’s hopes of staying in Formula 1 in 2025 heavily depend on James Vowles, the Williams team boss, and potential negotiations with Red Bull.
Since replacing Logan Sargeant mid-season, the 21-year-old Argentine has impressed the paddock with strong performances and a likable personality. However, Carlos Sainz is expected to take his seat at Williams next year.
“He’s keeping it warm!” jokes Sainz, the Mexican GP winner with Ferrari. “Seriously, Franco’s had a sensational start. He’s giving it his all, and we can’t ask for more. I hope he gets to stay in F1.”
Colapinto has been linked to Red Bull’s junior team (RB F1), an interesting but uncertain option. For now, he admits he has “nothing” concrete for 2025, aside from a possible reserve role at Williams.
“I don’t know where these rumors are coming from,” he told F1 TV. “Right now, I don’t have a seat for next year, and I may have to race elsewhere. My goal remains to prove myself and return in 2026 or 2027.”
A Conditional Future: Red Bull and Williams, A Complicated Transfer
Williams and Audi-Sauber have reportedly ruled out a full-time seat for Colapinto in 2025. Red Bull could be an option, but Dr. Helmut Marko has stated, “We’re not going to train someone for another team.”
Any partnership between Colapinto and Red Bull would therefore require his release or a buyout of his contract with Williams. Last weekend at the Mexican GP, Williams boss Vowles was seen speaking with his Red Bull counterpart, Christian Horner, fueling speculation.
“It’s normal for teams to talk to drivers, and we’ll see how things evolve,” Vowles said, adding it was a “sensitive negotiation.”
Carlos Slim’s Potential Role in Colapinto’s Career
Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim, a sponsor of Latin American drivers, could play a key role. Slim has supported drivers like Checo Pérez and could consider backing Colapinto if an opportunity arises. However, he stressed that their priority remains Pérez, due to his status as a Mexican ambassador in F1.
Slim hinted that Telmex, his company, might help buy out Colapinto’s contract with Williams to bring him to Red Bull if the chance materializes.
Colapinto’s career hinges on end-of-season negotiations, but one thing is clear: his potential and impact on the paddock mark him as a promising talent to watch in the coming years.
