Colapinto Sparks Rumours of F1 Exit as Williams Delays Move

Colapinto: Williams F1 should release me if they have no spot for me

Franco Colapinto stirs speculation, urging Williams F1 to release him if no seat is available in the near future.

Franco Colapinto believes Williams F1 should allow him to pursue opportunities with other teams as soon as next season if a seat isn’t forthcoming by 2026 within the Grove-based team.

The Argentine driver has turned heads with impressive performances in recent races, but his prospects of securing a place on the F1 grid for 2025 remain slim.

Negotiations have reportedly taken place—or are ongoing—with Audi and Red Bull, yet James Vowles, the Grove team’s principal, appears hesitant to fully release his driver. A loan, perhaps for a longer or shorter term, might be considered instead.

In recent developments, it has emerged that Flavio Briatore has also expressed interest in Colapinto for Alpine F1, despite Pierre Gasly and Jack Doohan being under contract.

In Brazil today, Colapinto was asked to respond to the swirling rumours of potential transfers.

“I don’t think I’m the right person to be asked this question. Naturally, I don’t know the answer… I suppose, yes, if Williams cannot offer me a seat in the medium term, I think the normal thing would be for them to let me explore other opportunities that might be best for my future.”

“But I’m not the right person to ask. I should be the last one. I’m here with Williams this weekend, and I’ll try to give my best here in Brazil – it’s a very exciting race, with a fantastic atmosphere.”

“I’m looking forward to driving the Williams at Interlagos.”

“For the future, I think it would be fantastic if a permanent seat becomes available. But I didn’t expect to be racing in F1 next year, and that’s still my main outlook. So, I’m not really getting too excited about everything that’s being said. But, yes, let’s see.”

Colapinto admits he hadn’t anticipated reaching Formula 1, at least not this quickly, and, consequently, his sole objective is to prove he deserves a long-term spot on the grid.

“I’d love to be in Formula 1. I joined very late in the year and had an incredible opportunity at Williams, thanks to James [Vowles].”

“When everyone in the team showed trust and gave me the confidence needed to be in this position, I received an amazing opportunity that I hadn’t expected to have this year, and I’m trying to do my best and achieve the best results possible to show I deserve a place here.”

“That’s what I’m striving to show and accomplish. If it’s not next year, I hope it’s in 2026 or 2027, and that I won’t face too much pressure or anything of the sort.”

“I’m trying to savour the moment and enjoy the opportunity that’s come my way. It’s been my dream since I was young to drive a Formula 1 car, and now, being here for these past nine races, it’s something truly special.”
