Franco Colapinto’s chance at Alpine depends on securing major funding, with Jack Doohan’s seat under threat amid financial uncertainties.
Colapinto’s Argentine sponsors may have to write a large check to push rookie Jack Doohan out of his seat at Alpine.
Advised by Flavio Briatore, the team has already spent millions securing Colapinto’s loan from Williams for this year and beyond, sparking intense speculation that Doohan’s days are numbered.
“I don’t want to be as harsh as Dr. Helmut Marko, calling Doohan a ‘Category C’ driver,” said Ralf Schumacher, “but in my opinion, he’s not good enough for Formula 1.”
“It’s too early to say. He has a very experienced teammate in Pierre Gasly, who is also well-integrated into the team and well-supported. That’s why criticizing Doohan might seem tough and unfair.”
“However, compared to other rookies, Doohan doesn’t seem like someone who will fight for the world title at any point.”
The team’s sponsor, Mercado Libre, already appears on the A525, but rumors in Saudi Arabia suggest that another of Colapinto’s sponsors, backing the 21-year-old driver, may have missed a payment.
Meanwhile, Doohan is reportedly secure in his seat at least until the summer.
“I don’t think he will be replaced without a significant financial contribution from Colapinto,” Schumacher added, “especially since Jack has a major sponsor bringing in €10 million. This money would need to be reimbursed and replaced by another sponsor if he were to be dropped.”
