Franco Colapinto could replace Jack Doohan at Alpine F1 in Imola, as pressure mounts after the Aussie’s disappointing Miami crash.
No driver can thrive under a spotlight this harsh. Since the season began, Jack Doohan’s every move has been scrutinised, and now, one slip in Miami may hand Franco Colapinto his shot.
Alpine F1 may be preparing to make a major driver change as early as the next race in Imola, with Jack Doohan potentially stepping aside in favor of Franco Colapinto.
The French team has so far declined to comment on the growing rumors. Team Principal Oliver Oakes avoided the topic completely after Sunday’s Miami Grand Prix, where Doohan failed to finish after a first-corner incident.
Flavio Briatore, known for his blunt style, previously hinted that Doohan’s position was under regular review.
According to sources, Alpine holds Doohan responsible for his crash in Miami. The Australian driver collided with Liam Lawson at Turn 1 after braking too late and jumping over the curb to avoid a Racing Bulls car. It marked another tough outing in a series of disappointing performances, despite a promising start to the season.
Now, with the European leg of the calendar about to begin, Alpine could activate its backup plan. Franco Colapinto appears to be the leading candidate to step in, potentially debuting in Formula 1 at Imola.
While rumors suggest Doohan may already have been informed of the decision, Alpine has yet to release any official statement, and Oakes did not speak to the media in Miami.
