Charles Leclerc is set for a special day as he shares the track with his brother Arthur, racing together for Ferrari today.
This weekend will be very special for Scuderia Ferrari in Abu Dhabi, as for the first time in this hybrid era of Formula 1, the team is in contention for a title, specifically the Constructors’ Championship, until the final race of the season.
It will also be special for Charles Leclerc, as during today’s first practice session, the other SF-24 will be driven by none other than his younger brother, Arthur.
“It will be a very special moment. Because, in a way, it means that all the sacrifices made by my family will have been worthwhile.”
Arthur replaces Carlos Sainz for this session, as part of the rule that each team must field a young driver with no more than two F1 races to their name at least twice a season.
In Mexico, Oliver Bearman drove Charles’ car, and today it will be Arthur’s turn. The young Leclerc won this year’s Italian GT endurance championship driving a Ferrari 296 GT3 and has spent a lot of time working in the Scuderia’s wind tunnel.
“My whole family is coming from Monaco for this,” added Charles. “Hopefully, this will be the start of a perfect and unforgettable weekend. My advice? I just told him to enjoy it.”
The Constructors’ Championship is still up for grabs, but something special will be needed to win it.
“21 points behind is still a lot,” admits the Monegasque driver.
“From our side, we need to execute everything perfectly, as we must finish with a double podium, and then something will probably need to go wrong for our rivals at McLaren. The track should suit the four top teams equally, so we’ll certainly see very tight lap times. We need to make sure that, this time, the thousandths are in our favor.”
