Canadian GP 2025: Key Times and Track Guide Revealed

1. Canadian GP 2025: Key Times and Track Guide Revealed

Formula 1 lands in Montreal for round ten of 2025, offering a unique blend of speed, strategy, and North American flair.

It’s already time for the tenth race of the 2025 Formula 1 season, following a dizzying run of nine races in 12 weeks. F1 now heads to Canada, sandwiched between two sets of European events, with the paddock setting course for Montreal this weekend.

One lingering question is whether Lance Stroll will be present with Aston Martin, as he underwent another wrist surgery after the Spanish Grand Prix weekend. The Canadian is aiming to be fit for his home race, but wrist operations can have serious consequences.

Rain is not currently expected over the weekend, but the conditions are changeable, and we’ll provide more details in our usual Thursday morning weather update.

The Track:

Both fast and slow, the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve is one of the true highlights of the F1 calendar. Despite its limited number of corners, the track presents a real challenge between the walls. With only five meters of elevation change, it is relatively flat and also one of the shortest circuits of the season (4361 meters).

The main challenge here is setting up a car that can attack the curbs aggressively. This is particularly tricky with the 2022-spec F1 cars, which feature very stiff suspensions. The resurfacing of the asphalt is also expected to play a role.

As in previous years, there will be three DRS zones: the first at the start of sector two, the second along the long straight returning to the pits, and the third on the start/finish straight.

Turn 1:
Approached at over 320 km/h, this braking zone leads into the slow combination of the first two corners—a true challenge, especially to maintain the perfect line on exit, where the pit lane rejoins the track.

Turn 3:
A fast right-left chicane where drivers must ride the curbs to stay on the ideal line. The track dips at the apex and the wall is very close on exit.

Turn 5:
A high-speed right-hand kink. While it can be taken flat out in qualifying, it’s trickier in the race when marbles accumulate off the racing line.

Turn 6:
Another chicane, this time left-right and noticeably slower than the previous one, though drivers again need to attack the curbs to maintain speed.

Turn 8:
Entered at over 300 km/h, this straight leads into a third right-left chicane, where the car must handle rapid direction changes and aggressively tackle the curbs.

Turn 10:
Famous for daring—sometimes too daring—overtakes, the slowest corner on the track features a heavy braking zone where cars decelerate from over 300 to 60 km/h. Multiple lines are possible in the wet, and a good exit is crucial heading into the DRS activation zone.

Turn 14:
The fastest section of the circuit. Speeds approach 340 km/h before heavy braking and the need to climb over the curbs in the final chicane. On exit, the outside is lined by the infamous “Wall of Champions,” which has caught out more than one title-winner over the years.

Contenders

McLaren will once again enter the Canadian Grand Prix as favorites, after a strong showing in Spain. With temperatures potentially cooler than in Barcelona, Mercedes could be closer.

Ferrari and Max Verstappen will also be in the mix—Verstappen particularly in qualifying, and the Scuderia drivers likely stronger in the race. The key question is which team will get closest to McLaren for this 2025 round.

Behind them, Aston Martin and Racing Bulls could contend for top-10 positions, though Williams shouldn’t be ruled out despite a poor showing in Spain, as they are expected to bounce back.

Schedule for the Canadian Grand Prix

Note that the Canadian Grand Prix schedule will naturally be offset for viewers in France, with late session start times and evening sessions locally, especially on Friday.
