Alpine F1 starts strong in testing, but breaking into the top four remains a challenge. Can they surprise as the season unfolds?
Alpine F1 appears to have made a strong start to the 2025 season, with solid private testing in Sakhir—nothing like in 2024.
While the natural goal is to challenge Aston Martin F1 for fifth place in the Constructors’ Championship, could there be an even bigger surprise?
Oliver Oakes, Alpine’s team principal, was asked about the prospect of competing with Red Bull, McLaren, Mercedes, or Ferrari.
“It’s going to be tough. Throughout this regulation cycle, some teams have gained the upper hand. McLaren made a big step forward, as did Aston Martin before losing some ground.”
“We always hope to get a little closer, but our focus is on doing a good job and producing a strong car.”
“The disappointment of last season’s start took a lot of energy out of the team, and we had to work hard to catch up.”
“We want to keep our heads down and get off to a solid start. So let’s wait before making more optimistic predictions.”
Pierre Gasly, meanwhile, shared his hope of seeing a third team join the title fight this season after the 2024 battle between Red Bull and McLaren. And he aims to spring the occasional surprise.
“Personally, I think it would be cool for the sport to have a third team fighting for the championship, which I believe is possible. But it won’t be us!”
“And with a bit of bias, I hope the midfield can challenge the top teams more consistently and, hopefully, create a few surprises, as we saw on some occasions last year.”
