Colton Herta, Cadillac F1’s top pick, remains focused on clinching his first IndyCar title before considering a move to Formula 1.
Herta appears to be the clear favorite for Cadillac F1’s first seat.
The team’s consultant, Mario Andretti, chairman of the board, has praised him multiple times in recent weeks.
At the start of the IndyCar season, the American was asked about a potential move to F1 in 2026. But he’s not certain he wants to make the switch, as his main focus remains on securing his first IndyCar title.
“If I were to accept, I’d be leaving an amazing group of people I truly enjoy working with, so it’s not a given for me. It’s not an easy decision to just say: ‘Alright, see you later.’ I’d be giving up an opportunity to ever work with these people again.”
“It’s obviously an honor to be considered. I have my super license, so I can be the American Cadillac F1 wants. We’ll see what the team and Dan decide. But the focus is on that IndyCar title I want so much. If it could happen this year, everything would be easier.”
Dan Towriss, CEO of TWG Motorsport, which will manage Cadillac F1, appreciated his response.
“It shows how focused and present he is in IndyCar, and I love that. That’s exactly the answer I’d want Colton to give me. We’re focused on this year’s goals. He finished second last year, and he knows exactly what he could have changed, which races he would have done differently. So there are just a few more steps to take to reach that championship title.”
“He worked hard in the offseason, the team had a great offseason as well, and you know, he really wants that title. It makes no sense for him to think about Formula 1 when the season is just starting.”
