Zak Brown supports a flexible F1 calendar, proposing 20 permanent races with 8 rotating, aligning with Domenicali’s 2026 rotation vision.
While F1 and its CEO Stefano Domenicali have reiterated in recent days their commitment to capping the season at 24 races—even considering alternating some European Grands Prix—McLaren CEO Zak Brown has presented his own vision for eventually having 28 Grand Prix venues, but with no more than 24 in a given year.
Drivers and team principals have repeatedly stated that 24 races are the maximum achievable without posing health risks to team members.
“Formula 1 and the FIA work and consult extensively on all matters concerning Formula 1.”
“I think we have very constructive meetings with them. Regarding the calendar, I agree with Stefano and others that 24 is the limit.”
“As I mentioned earlier this year, I think we should consider 20 fixed races and eight that alternate every two years, allowing us to keep growing the sport, as there is certainly demand.”
“If we could be in 28 markets, that would be fantastic. But I believe we can only hold 24 races per year. So, I support alternating certain races as a solution to the expanding calendar.”
The F1 calendar has grown continuously over recent years amidst a surge in popularity. New locations like Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Miami, and Las Vegas have been added, and Brown praised Domenicali’s handling of this growth.
“Stefano has done an excellent job in adapting the calendar, but it’s always challenging due to intense competition, whether from other sports, TV schedules, or public holidays.”
“There’s a domino effect that’s hard to manage. Building a calendar isn’t easy. But at FOM, they’re very collaborative and consultative. They don’t surprise us and are receptive to our input.”
