Bottas Slams 'Unlucky' Timing of Sauber Exit

Bottas: ‘Even Verstappen Couldn’t Do Better at Sauber’

17/01/2025

Valtteri Bottas insists Verstappen couldn’t outperform him at Sauber and laments the unfortunate timing of his dismissal.

Valtteri Bottas believes he could not have done anything better or differently to secure a contract extension with Stake F1 and ensure his future during Sauber’s transition to Audi. The Finn will serve as a reserve driver for Mercedes in 2025 and has no regrets.

“I’d say that two days before the decision, I started hearing rumors and other things,” Bottas told Motorsport Week. “But I knew when the final board meeting would take place and how it would unfold.”

“And yes, the decision was made. I mean, it’s clear there was nothing more I could have done. So I accept it. As I said earlier in my short statement, when one door closes, another one opens, bringing new opportunities for the future.”

Bottas regrets the fact that his bosses made a late decision, leaving him with little room to maneuver: “Yes, it’s a bit unfortunate how things played out and dragged on. I ended up in a position where I had no other option but to leave.”

“And then it didn’t work out, so I knew it was over for now. I think it’s just bad luck. I believe we tried everything we could with management, but things unfolded in an unfortunate way.”

However, Bottas did not accept a one-year extension, as he wanted to commit to and experience the early stages of the Audi F1 project: “I always knew it wouldn’t be easy for Audi. It’s going to take time, but how much time? That’s the big question mark.”

“But yes, I’ve always committed to a long-term project, even if it would be challenging. That’s why I’ve always made it very clear that I wouldn’t be willing to do just one year. I knew it would take time, more than a year or two. This is where we are now.”

Somewhat disheartened by the way he was let go, despite being the team’s best driver, Bottas understands that Formula 1 is not sentimental: “I know this sport is not fair. In the end, it’s a big business.”

“Many factors influence driver decisions. I understand that. It doesn’t really upset me. These things happen. I think, ultimately, I just found myself in an unlucky situation for my career.”

Asked if he gave it his all in 2024, Bottas confirms his consistent dedication: “Yes, it’s in my nature. I always try to do everything I can. And I think I had a good season.”

“Of course, not in terms of results, but if you look at individual performances, I’m satisfied. I don’t believe anyone, not even Max, could have done better with this car. That’s just how it is.”
