Valtteri Bottas confirms his mentor role for Andrea Kimi Antonelli, helping the rookie navigate his first F1 season with Mercedes this year.
As requested by Toto Wolff, Mercedes F1 team principal, Valtteri Bottas has vowed to assist Andrea Kimi Antonelli during his rookie F1 season after returning as a reserve driver.
After being overlooked by Sauber/Audi for a contract extension this year, Bottas rejoined Mercedes F1.
The Finn will replace Antonelli or George Russell if either is unable to participate in an F1 race weekend this season.
Bottas will be eager to stand out as much as possible, as he openly admits he is aiming for a return to the grid in 2026, potentially with Cadillac F1, which is seeking an experienced driver.
Bottas was asked about his role and Wolff’s comments, describing him as a mentor to the young Italian.
“I think ‘mentor’ isn’t far off. When you’re a rookie, when you join the sport, there are so many new things you have to learn.”
“I can certainly help in that regard. My job is to try to assist the team as much as I can. Kimi is a rookie, so he will probably have more questions than George.”
“The team will have an extra pair of hands during race weekends to analyze data, racing lines, that kind of thing.”
“I will attend all meetings – the technical aspects – and contribute a lot in the simulator. That kind of thing. It will be a busy year, a different one for me, but I’m looking forward to it.”
