Valtteri Bottas plans a full F1 comeback with Cadillac in 2026, while staying sharp with Mercedes reserve driver tests.

Bottas has revealed plans for additional F1 testing as part of his reserve driver role with Mercedes.

The 35-year-old Finn got back behind the wheel of an F1 car for the first time last week since losing his Sauber seat for 2025, driving the 2023 McLaren MCL60 in Barcelona.

Bottas participated in a previous car test (TPC) in line with the agreement between McLaren and Mercedes, which allows access to its F1 reserve drivers.

He also shared that he will be doing further TPC testing for Mercedes this year.

“For me, the key this year was to get some testing done,” Bottas said during the Japanese Grand Prix weekend.

“That was the important part. Last week, I was back on track with McLaren, and it was a lot of fun. We have a few tests planned with Mercedes, some TPC testing, and so on.”

“For now, I’ll see if it’s enough to keep me sharp. If I feel it’s not enough to stay in shape, I might consider doing some one-off races, but for now, everything’s good.”

Though Bottas enjoys his new role at Mercedes, he remains focused on securing a full-time return to F1 by 2026. The Finnish driver is reportedly a candidate for one of Cadillac’s two seats as the American team prepares for its F1 debut next season.

Cadillac has made it clear they’re looking for an experienced F1 driver for their entry.

“I’ve always known it would be a different role and a different feeling, being present in the garage on race weekends instead of on track, but I think for me, being part of a strong team is still the best thing to do,” Bottas said.

“It’s nice to be involved with a strong brand, staying up to date with the latest in F1 because it’s a sport that evolves so quickly within just a year.”

“I’d love to race again. That’s my ultimate goal. Whatever opportunities come up, I’ll definitely look into them.”

When asked about discussions with teams for 2026, Bottas responded, “Of course, there are talks.”

“I’m a driver who wants to be back on the grid, so of course, I’ll be having conversations. That’s the goal. I’m not done with this sport yet.”
