Alonso Pressures Audi F1 to Decide on Rising Star Bortoleto

Alonso awaits Audi F1’s decision on Gabriel Bortoleto

03/10/2024

Fernando Alonso urges Audi F1 to secure Gabriel Bortoleto’s future, as the young talent leads the Formula 2 championship.

Fernando Alonso has placed the ball in Audi F1’s court regarding the potential signing of his protégé Gabriel Bortoleto, warning that the young driver “doesn’t lack admirers.”

While Sauber moved quickly to secure Nico Hulkenberg’s services for 2025 and beyond in the Audi F1 era, the Swiss-based team has yet to make a decision on his teammate, as new Audi F1 director Mattia Binotto weighs his options.

One driver widely considered to be on Binotto’s shortlist is Bortoleto, the McLaren-backed racer currently leading the Formula 2 championship as he aims to secure back-to-back F3 and F2 titles.

McLaren has shown interest in striking a deal with Sauber/Audi F1 for Bortoleto, while keeping ties with the 19-year-old Brazilian intact. Alonso confirmed that Sauber is not the only team Bortoleto has impressed.

“Sauber needs to make a decision,” said Alonso, Bortoleto’s manager. “Gabriel is highly promising to everyone, and he doesn’t lack admirers.”

Alonso also supported McLaren’s stance that their ties with Bortoleto wouldn’t hinder a potential move to Sauber. “There are never any issues with teams in Formula 1. Everything can be worked out.”

Bortoleto’s chances of securing a Sauber seat have been boosted by the withdrawal of two key rivals—Zane Maloney choosing to move to Formula E, and Binotto reportedly opting against Mick Schumacher.

Current Sauber driver Valtteri Bottas has also dismissed rumors of already signing a one-year extension but stated he is in a strong position to do so.

However, Alonso also emphasized that Bortoleto’s breakthrough into F1 must happen at the right time and with the right team for his development.

“Gabriel is just a rookie with pure talent. It’s incredible.”

“Brazil also has a long history in Formula 1 with many great drivers. But maybe there’s a bit too much pressure. We need to give Gabriel time. His moment in Formula 1 will come. We must not take any shortcuts that could hinder the development of his talent.”

“He needs to enter Formula 1 at the right time, when he’s ready. And he also needs to be with the right team and in the right environment, balancing pressure and motivation with the proper timing for his F1 entry.”
