F1 Veteran Berger: Sainz Deserved Better than Williams

Former F1 ace Gerhard Berger finds it unfortunate that Carlos Sainz’s choices have narrowed to Williams or Audi for 2025.

Former F1 driver Gerhard Berger expressed regret that Carlos Sainz had been excluded from all the “good” teams for 2025. During the Montreal weekend, it became clear that the 29-year-old Spanish driver had two options for his next step in Formula 1 after being ousted by Ferrari for 2025 in favor of Lewis Hamilton. These two options are Williams and Audi, owned by Sauber.

It was even reported in Canada by the Spanish press – and denied – that Sainz had already signed a contract with Williams for 2025 and 2026, with team boss James Vowles making a strong public pitch to attract the three-time Grand Prix winner.

However, doors were closed by Christian Horner and Toto Wolff at Red Bull and Mercedes F1, respectively. The former preferred to bet again on Sergio Perez, a choice still widely criticized, while the latter wants to bet on youth with Kimi Antonelli, failing to attract Max Verstappen.

Asked about Sainz’s limited options for 2025, former Ferrari driver Berger said he was upset for the Spaniard. “It’s really a shame. He deserved to go to Red Bull or Mercedes. I feel a bit sorry for him because he is about on the same level as Charles Leclerc.”

“But Ferrari chose Hamilton, who is supposed to bring a new dynamism. It is true that Lewis will certainly bring with him one or two important engineers that Ferrari needs, such as Adrian Newey, among others.”

Regarding Sainz’s hesitation between Williams and Audi, Berger adds: “It’s extremely difficult for him because there really isn’t a good door open right now. And between the two, it’s inevitably a gamble whose outcome is hard to predict.”

He recognizes that the future prospects of Sauber are good thanks to Audi, but he thinks it might take years before Sainz can benefit from it.

“A premium German manufacturer in Formula 1 is an absolute asset. But the difficulty of a new arrival in the highest category of motorsport should not be underestimated. It requires patience and few mistakes.”

“I remember Red Bull. I was close to them at the time and, despite the presence of Adrian Newey and some mistakes, it took them six years to become a winning team.”
