Ben Sulayem Calls for Force in Curbing FIA Critiques

FIA to Enforce Tougher Penalties on Official Criticisms

15/08/2024

FIA intensifies crackdown on criticisms; Ben Sulayem champions a forceful stance.

The FIA and its president, Mohammed Ben Sulayem, have amended a definition in the International Sporting Code to enable federation officials to penalize abusive remarks towards stewards from Formula 1 drivers and teams, in an effort to prevent an escalation online.

The definition of “misconduct” will evolve in the International Sporting Code to curb online hatred towards FIA employees. Ben Sulayem explains the rationale behind this change and reveals a link between comments from Formula 1 stakeholders and the subsequent online criticism and abuse.

“In our ongoing fight against online abuse, recent investigations have demonstrated a direct correlation between negative remarks by drivers and team members and the surge in hatred towards officials on social media,” he stated.

“At the last World Motor Sport Council, members approved a modification to the definition of misconduct within the ISC following incidents where prominent members of our sport made statements about officials that encouraged abuse.”

“This alteration will provide additional support to FIA officials and volunteers who dedicate their time to enhancing our sport, its safety, and fairness.”

The previous revision of the same term took place at the end of last year to penalize Sergio Pérez, who had criticized the stewards, and Yuki Tsunoda was also penalized this year after sharply criticizing them on the radio.

Other drivers and managers have criticized the stewards, such as Fernando Alonso, who accused them of penalizing him due to his nationality. Ben Sulayem has therefore called on the stewards to toughen their stance to counteract such remarks.

“Our stewards must be prepared to demonstrate strength when combating this form of abuse, and they have my full support, as well as that of our International Sporting Code, in making their decisions. I urge them to show that the FIA will tolerate no form of abuse in our sport.”
