RB F1 team’s Round-the-Clock Factory Effort Unveiled

Bayer unveils the intense challenges RB F1 tackled following the Barcelona race.

The RB F1 team experienced a decline in performance with its Barcelona upgrade, and Peter Bayer believes that the issues arising from these new components have been understood and resolved. The team CEO revealed that his squad worked tirelessly around the clock to quickly pinpoint the source of the problems.

“I think it’s down to several factors. Firstly, because the competition is extremely tight, we’re obviously pushing as hard as possible to maintain our edge. This means that in the design process, you’re driving the team to the limits, and in the factory, you’re doing the same.”

“This results in us having three shifts running at the moment to produce the parts. Three shifts equate to 24-hour operations. The pressure is as intense off the track as it is on it. From what I’ve gathered, there have been two or three issues during this process. There was a minor correlation issue with one of the aerodynamic parts.”

“Ultimately, we have been very strong in slow corners, but we’re not great in terms of drag and efficiency, so we tried to trade a bit of downforce in the slow corners for high-speed ones.”

“And that’s what we did. But, as we discovered, we gave up a bit too much speed in the slow corners! Once we realized this, we were able to revert back.”

“Then, in terms of production, we had an issue with the rear wing, with an aluminum piece. It turned out that the aluminum wasn’t strong enough to bear the load of the rear wing. It didn’t break, but it began to flex because it wasn’t sturdy enough.”

“There was also a small piece missing on the wing, and, obviously, this was fixed within a week and we had the new wing on the car [in Austria], where now the parts are made of titanium instead of alloy, and it’s working.”

“The entire team has been superb.”

He finally praised his team’s response, which managed these challenges perfectly: “I think the worst thing to do at that moment is to panic and try to blame or be too proud and say ‘no, it will work.’ That doesn’t work. Honestly, I must say the entire team has been superb.”

“I quote a team member, a new member who told me after the debriefing: ‘Peter, it was absolutely incredible. I’ve never seen a team respond with so much calm and determination. If we don’t make it today, we’ll make it next week.'”

“This guy has been part of more than one Formula 1 team. Honestly, the team has done an excellent job. There’s a simpler way to proceed: we all need to be obsessed with performance, meaning if we see something isn’t working, let’s try to proactively fix it.”

“Don’t wait for your neighbor to pick up the ball—you go yourself, you do it, you pick it up, you fix it with the help of those who know how to do it. There’s no place for blame, no pointing fingers. And beyond not blaming, we need to seek the truth.”
