Barcelona’s Bold Bid to Retain F1 Amid Madrid’s Move

Barcelona has not given up on the idea of extending its relationship with Formula 1, despite Madrid securing a new long-term contract to start hosting the Spanish Grand Prix (official title) from 2026 onwards.

Formula 1 CEO, Stefano Domenicali, does not rule out a scenario where Madrid and Barcelona, the traditional venue of the Spanish GP since the early ’90s, might coexist in the future.

This is precisely what Roger Torrent, Catalonia’s Minister of Business and Labour, claims to be working on.

Also serving as the president of the Circuit of Catalonia, Torrent mentioned that discussions with Formula 1 are “well-targeted and making progress.”

Torrent is confident that this year’s Spanish GP will be “the best ever held in Catalonia,” and it will play a “decisive role” in the contractual negotiations with FOM.

“The circuit is undergoing spectacular renovations,” he noted, “with a significant investment to bring it into the 21st century and make it the best permanent track in the world.”

“When we renewed for five years, up to 2026, it allowed us to develop a strategic plan and commence the renovation of the facilities. We still have three of these five Grand Prix to go, and we are convinced that the next one in June will be the best in the circuit’s history.”

He stated that the circuit would work with local authorities and institutions so that F1 could “remain in Barcelona for many more years to come.”

“Both Formula 1 and MotoGP are pleased with the involvement of Catalonia and Barcelona in hosting their Grand Prix.”
