Fernando Alonso believes the 2025 F1 season will be split in two, as stricter front wing regulations from Barcelona could reshuffle the grid.
Alonso, who drives for Aston Martin F1, asserts that the changes to the front wing from Barcelona onwards will disrupt any analysis of the upcoming season based solely on pre-season testing and the early races.
The FIA has indeed decided to tighten load tests on F1 wings, and from Barcelona, these tests will be significantly stricter to reduce flexibility.
To the point of believing a season could shift in favor of one team or another? Alonso thinks so.
“I feel that the Bahrain tests and the early races will be less relevant than usual.”
“In the past, starting the year well seemed to guarantee continuity, but in the last two years, we’ve seen radical improvements—McLaren in 2023, Mercedes last year, even Haas.”
“As the gaps between teams are so small, if a team gets it right by the ninth race, with this major change to the wings, the season is long enough that there is still a lot to play for until the 24th race. So, I’m taking a calmer approach to pre-season.”
“A good year for us means at least matching what we did last season. We finished fifth in the Constructors’ Championship, but I don’t think we were the fifth-fastest team by the end of the year.”
