F1 CEO hints at a dynamic future for Spain’s races, expressing contentment with Barcelona’s efforts but remaining non-committal about its fate post-2026.
The Formula 1 CEO emphasizes the possibility that the discipline’s calendar could host two World Championship rounds in Spain.
In 2026, Barcelona, the traditional host of the Spanish Grand Prix, is expected to still hold its race, which will complement the brand-new urban event in Madrid.
Although Madrid has secured a long-term contract, 2026 is the last contracted year for Barcelona, where the race will take place at the Circuit de Catalunya.
“I expected this question,” smiled F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali, “but maybe I did not expect it to be the first.”
“We are here to talk about Cantabria, not Catalonia or Madrid.”
Indeed, after it was revealed a few days ago that Banco Santander was leaving Ferrari as a sponsor, Domenicali was in the Cantabrian capital – Santander – to announce that the Spanish bank was the new global sponsor of F1.
However, journalists wanted to know if Barcelona had a chance of keeping its Formula 1 race alive after 2026.
“We are very pleased with what Barcelona has done in terms of works and modernization, and what it is doing to try to renew with us in the future. But we are also very pleased with what Madrid brings, as it comes with a proposal from the city.”
“It’s a good time for Spain from a sporting perspective. And as always in life, competition delivers the best result for the sport.”
Two races for Spain might be conceivable, given that there’s talk of a fourth annual race in the United States?
“One more race in the United States, that’s not true,” retorted Domenicali. “That’s clear. Three races in the United States, that’s perfect.”
“But as I’ve said before, I’m not here to talk about the calendar, but to talk about Santander and the great deal we’ve signed. Of course, it’s a good sign, as everything can help, but it’s not good to focus on that today, because the focus is on the great collaboration between F1 and Santander.”
“What I would say is that everyone has their work to do so that we can anticipate the future calendar.”
