Autumn Ultimatum Newey to Decide on F1 Future

Newey Sets Autumn Deadline for New F1 Team Choice

03/07/2024

Adrian Newey will choose his next F1 team by autumn, balancing his commitment to the RB17 project with vacation time.

Adrian Newey, Red Bull’s designer, has stated that he must decide on his future in F1 by autumn.

In May, Red Bull confirmed that the technical consultant would leave the team in early 2025 after nearly two decades in Milton Keynes, having contributed to the team’s 13 championships, potentially 15 by the end of the year.

The 65-year-old is expected to return to F1 with a rival team and has been strongly linked with Ferrari and Aston Martin F1 teams, noting that Mercedes and Williams have also had discussions with him.

Newey has stepped back from his daily responsibilities at Red Bull Racing and is now working on the RB17 hypercar and other projects before his definitive departure.

“I don’t know,” Newey said today from the Red Bull factory when asked if he knew what he wanted to do next.

“For now, I’m still working on the RB17 hypercar, and I’m taking some time off.”

“Last week, my wife and I actually took seven days off, and we were lucky with the weather, obviously, and we toured the south coast with our dogs in an old Aston Martin DB6, and it was a lot of fun.”

When asked if he will know what he’ll do in 2025 by autumn or winter, Newey replied, “That’s certainly a target; by then, I will need to make a decision. Preferably by autumn.”

Red Bull missed a home victory last time in Austria after Max Verstappen was involved in a late-race clash with Lando Norris.

Newey expects there will be no major repercussions from this incident moving forward.

“I imagine Max and Lando will probably have a little talk at Silverstone. They’re both good guys; they’ll sort it out between themselves.”

“It’s one of those moments when everyone gets a bit irritable, but no one should be blamed at all; it’s just one of those things that happen in F1. They are both good drivers; they’ll manage.”
