Audi Says No to F1’s V10 Comeback Plans

Audi Pushes Back Against Potential Return of V10 Engines in Formula 1

24/03/2025

Audi pushes back as F1 debates ditching hybrids for V10s, warning against scrapping 2026 rules before they even take effect.

Audi has firmly voiced its opposition to the idea of bringing back V10 engines in Formula 1, a move that’s being discussed for as early as 2028 or 2029.

The German manufacturer, which is set to join F1 with its own works team in 2026, entered the sport based on the upcoming engine regulations that focus on hybrid V6 power units. With major investments already underway, Audi is making it clear: it doesn’t want the rulebook rewritten just a few years after its arrival.

The FIA recently confirmed it’s open to conversations about reintroducing V10s but emphasized that any decision would need full agreement across teams — especially since the 2026 engine rules are already in development.

In a statement shared with F1Lead.com, Audi highlighted why a shift now would be problematic:

“The upcoming regulatory changes, especially the new hybrid power unit rules set for 2026 and beyond, were a key factor in Audi’s decision to enter Formula 1,” the company stated.

“These power unit regulations align with the same technology trends that drive innovation in Audi’s road cars.”

In short: Audi’s all-in on the future — and that future, as far as they’re concerned, is hybrid, not a step back to roaring V10s.
