McLaren F1 issued a statement to the media after Stake F1 / Audi announced the signing of Gabriel Bortoleto earlier this morning (read here).
The Brazilian has been a member of McLaren’s driver development programme since October 2023, following his F3 drivers’ title win. He currently leads the F2 standings and is on course for the championship title by season’s end. Bortoleto is ahead with a 4.5-point margin over Red Bull junior Isack Hadjar, with races still to come in Qatar and Abu Dhabi.
Woking’s team confirmed Bortoleto has indeed been released from the young driver programme.
“Gabriel Bortoleto will be released from McLaren’s driver development programme at the end of the 2024 season to pursue a new opportunity in his career.”
“It has been a pleasure working with Gabriel over the past year and to have been part of his success and growth as a driver through the McLaren driver development programme.”
“We have a strong driver lineup with Lando and Oscar, and we have always been clear that we would not stand in the way of an opportunity for Gabriel to progress while we are unable to offer him a seat at McLaren.”
“We will continue to support Gabriel in his Formula 2 title campaign in 2024 and wish him the very best for his career beyond F2.”
