Audi F1’s Mattia Binotto unveils prospective drivers, including a promising Frenchman and an F2 contender, for the team’s future roster.
Stake F1 is still seeking a second driver for next year, and especially for 2026 when the team will become Audi F1. Mattia Binotto, the operations director and technical director of the project, explains that in addition to Valtteri Bottas and Mick Schumacher, the names of Théo Pourchaire and Gabriel Bortoleto are being considered by the team.
“We are looking at all our options,” Binotto stated. “We are wondering whether to bet on experience or youth. Nothing has been decided yet, but we should make a decision quickly, as it is not in our interest to have further speculation.”
“We have several drivers in mind. Théo is our current reserve driver and is already part of the family, and there is no doubt he is on our list. Gabriel is performing very well in F2, he has shown he has great talent.”
“It is certain that we are watching what he does, as we do with many others, but I do not think he is the only name we are focusing on.”
“There are thus many names on the list, a lot of potential and great experience. Again, it is about judging what is most important to us in the short, medium, and long term. A clear and precise plan, for which I really have no answer today.”
A young driver committed to the long term?
The desire to pair Nico Hülkenberg with another experienced driver might be tempting, but Binotto admits that the team might also decide to engage a young driver who would spearhead the project in the long term.
“It is certainly something we must judge. Do we want to gain experience? Or, as I said, this is a project aimed at a medium and long-term objective. What is best for us by the final goal?”
“Is it rather to acquire experience in the short term and then move on to something else? It is up to us to decide. Today, I do not think we are in a position to respond. We are certainly listening to all potential drivers.”
“We are definitely assessing the issue that poses the best compromise. In fact, in the end, it is a choice, which you put on the balance of all aspects. I think we will make a decision as soon as possible, without any doubt, because we need to set up the team for next year and for the future.”
“We must also put an end to all speculation, as it is not in our interest. But for now, no decision has been made, as we do not know what will be best.”
