Audi celebrates Cadillac’s F1 entry, seeing it as proof of Formula 1’s growing global allure and a boost for competition.
In 2026, Formula 1 will welcome a new team, Cadillac F1, with the brand set to become an engine manufacturer by 2028 or later. For Audi’s CEO, who will also enter F1 in 2026, this is a positive sign for the sport’s future appeal.
“Yes, a new engine manufacturer will join Formula 1,” said Gernot Döllner. “This demonstrates the strength of Formula 1 and this platform, and it’s a strong signal to have another manufacturer on the grid. I think competition is what we need, and it only adds value to our project.”
Audi recently announced the sale of a stake in the team to Qatar, and Döllner explained the reasoning behind the agreement: “We were approached by many investors, so we didn’t have to go looking.”
“But a year ago, Qatar visited our facility in Hinwil, the power unit division, and based on what they saw—the professionalism, the strategic vision, the setup—they were convinced. From there, we had constructive discussions and built this partnership.”
The German clarified that Qatar’s stake increases the team’s value and does not indicate a partial withdrawal by Audi: “The arrival of this strong partner follows a model adopted by many other teams. From our perspective, it’s a necessary step to becoming one of the top teams in the future.”
“At Audi, the project is viewed positively, and I believe it reinforces the message that we are truly committed to a long-term investment in Formula 1. It’s a capital injection into the project, which does not reduce Audi’s commitment but adds funds to the effort. It’s a strong signal.”
