Adrian Newey’s influence promises a transformative leap for Aston Martin F1, with 2025 development setting the stage for sustained success.
Will Adrian Newey be the wise and energetic Jedi Master Aston Martin F1 needs to reach the top? That’s the view of team principal Mike Krack, who sees the engineer as a visionary capable of accelerating the progress of a team heavily investing in its technological evolution.
“I think Adrian will be the force driving us forward; I love the analogy with Yoda,” said Krack. “The new simulator truly feels like something out of Star Wars. Overall, I believe this represents a significant step forward for us. Once it’s fully operational, I think it will prove extremely beneficial.”
“The team is working to balance the development of 2025 and 2026 as much as possible. For now, the 2025 development is in full swing, with an eye on 2026. And soon, we’ll have Yoda’s help and his strength, so nothing can go wrong for 2026.”
Last year, Aston Martin celebrated podium finishes with a chant of “Oh Fernando Alonso,” but the Spaniard regrets that the tune hasn’t been sung in 2024: “Unfortunately, this year, we haven’t had much to sing about, and that’s not a good thing.”
“We introduced that chant last year. I remember it well, after the first race. So let’s do our best to ensure we can applaud and sing that song again.”
Alonso hopes for fewer challenges in 2024, as Aston Martin will rely on its own wind tunnel instead of Mercedes F1’s. He acknowledges that the team faced similar issues to their engine supplier due to the shared wind tunnel.
“There’s no easy fix or straightforward answer because if there were, we would have likely resolved it more easily than we have. I think it’s about understanding the car’s dynamics more deeply.”
“We encountered some of the same wind tunnel issues Mercedes dealt with last year. Our use of the Mercedes wind tunnel limited us to some extent. Indeed, Mercedes was also misled by its wind tunnel data during the development of its ground-effect cars.”
