Aston Martin F1 grapples with pace and penalties as Silverstone looms—a critical juncture for the team.
Aston Martin F1 never truly contended for points at the Red Bull Ring.
Lance Stroll finished 13th and was unable to join the fray with Alpine F1 and Daniel Ricciardo. In truth, as he reveals, his race could have ended as early as the first lap.
“I was caught up in contact on the first lap of the race, but managed to avoid damage. From there, my afternoon mostly involved managing tyres to make a two-stop strategy work. I made some overtakes, but we lacked the pace to improve our positions at the finish.”
“It’s been a challenging weekend; we’re in a series of races that don’t suit our car, so there’s a lot of work to be done.”
Fernando Alonso suffered heavily: not only was the Spaniard off the pace, but he also received a 10-second penalty for contact with Guanyu Zhou at turn 3. When things don’t go right…
“The day was tough for us, as we expected. We didn’t have the pace, so we tried different strategies to improve. Then we had a collision with Zhou when I locked up at turn 3. The penalty didn’t really alter our outcome as we were already out of the points.”
“We have our home race next week at Silverstone, and the team is doing everything possible to improve the situation.”
Will Mike Krack, the team principal, declare a state of emergency at Aston Martin F1 as performance declines from one Grand Prix to the next?
“Today’s result reflects the pace of our car this weekend. We didn’t provide our drivers with a car to fight for points. We knew this series of races would be tough, but we must focus on the future and get through this phase. Lance and Fernando fought for every place.”
“Next weekend, we have our home race at Silverstone, in front of our fans and colleagues. We need to knuckle down and improve quickly.”
