Antonelli eyes Monaco redemption after Imola woes

Mercedes F1 rookie Andrea Kimi Antonelli targets redemption at the Monaco Grand Prix after a frustrating and incomplete home race in Imola.

Andrea Kimi Antonelli is eager to race in Monaco this weekend. The Mercedes F1 driver has only one previous experience on this circuit but expects an impressive weekend at the wheel of a Formula 1 car on such a unique track.

“I love this circuit, I discovered it last year for the first time in F2 and I can’t wait to drive tomorrow to see what it’s like in a Formula 1 car. But I’m really looking forward to it,” said Antonelli, who explained the work done after Imola and the disappointment of his home race weekend.

“We analyzed what went wrong at Imola, especially the race pace. We had pace in qualifying and that was my fault, but the race pace was a bit weaker.”

“We’ve done the analysis and we hope to be stronger this weekend. The weekend was tough on my side, it was disappointing. I know what I did wrong and what I need to do better for my next home race, which will be Monza. But it’s a shame.”

“When I put on the mediums in the second stint I started having throttle issues before it gave out completely. I could feel something was off but hoped it would hold, but it didn’t. Not finishing your home Grand Prix is never ideal.”

The Italian is ready to move on from the disappointment of his home race: “I feel good, I’ve recovered from Imola which was a busy and intense weekend. It was tough, but I’ve been able to rest and prepare for this weekend. It will be important because it needs to be a redemption weekend and I’m excited. I love the circuit and I love this place.”
