Mario Andretti hints Cadillac F1 plans include Ferrari engines and signing IndyCar star Colton Herta for its 2026 entry.
Cadillac aims to finalize a deal with Ferrari to use its power units upon entering Formula 1 in 2026. The team is also considering hiring American IndyCar star Colton Herta for one of its two cars.
These are the first revelations from Mario Andretti, the 1978 world champion, who ensures the Andretti name remains part of the operation as a consultant and non-executive director.
“Cadillac will have its own power unit ready for the 2028 season. That’s the goal, and it will happen.”
“An initial agreement to use Ferrari power units is under discussion. That’s what we’re talking about. It’s not finalized yet, but it’s the objective. And it’s the preference.”
“My history with Ferrari and my relationship with Mr. Ferrari – all of this plays a huge role.”
“There are so many factors here that make this a very logical choice. It would be the best of both worlds.”
The other option remains Honda, but the Japanese manufacturer appears inclined to partner exclusively with Aston Martin F1 for its official return.
As for drivers, Herta (pictured below), who finished second in the IndyCar series for Andretti this year, is a candidate to race for the team in 2026.
“He’s certainly one of the drivers being considered. I think you have to keep options open, as there will still be an entire season ahead where we won’t yet be active players.”
When asked why Cadillac received the green light while the initial bid under their name was stalled, Mario Andretti avoided any controversy.
“It’s hard to pinpoint exactly why F1 dropped its opposition to the project.”
“I could look back and bring up events and so on, but some of them weren’t very pleasant, and I don’t really want to go there. It’s all behind us now.”
“We’re simply looking ahead. It happened, and it happened the right way. Everyone is happy, including my son, Michael. That’s the most important part. No one was harmed, if that’s your question.”
Andretti stated that his role within Cadillac’s F1 operation will be similar to that of his former rival Niki Lauda at Mercedes F1 until his passing in 2019.
“Obviously, they’ve looked to rely on my experience and perspective – from selecting driver talent to even technical talent.”
“Motorsport is my family. I’ve been continuously involved in many aspects, and that continues. And that’s it. I don’t want a specific day-to-day role where I have to clock in. I don’t need it, and I don’t want it. But I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to contribute to many key decisions. This is my rodeo.”
