Christian Horner reveals Andretti could still enter Formula 1 by acquiring an existing team, despite previous setbacks.
Christian Horner, Team Principal at Red Bull Racing, emphasized that the door remains open for Andretti to join Formula 1, but only if they take over an existing team.
The American team had attempted to join the grid in 2025 or 2026 in partnership with General Motors’ Cadillac brand, ultimately being denied entry by FOM after passing through the initial application phases of the FIA.
This marks the second time in recent years that Michael Andretti has failed in his bid to enter F1, having seen a deal to take over Sauber fall through at the last minute in 2021.
Despite the diminishing prospects of Andretti joining the grid, Horner has not entirely ruled out the possibility.
“Formula 1 has clearly stated its stance,” Horner revealed during winter testing.
“That doesn’t mean Andretti cannot come in, it just means they cannot come in as a new team or the 11th.”
“Therefore, there is still an opportunity for them to take over a franchise or an existing team if they can meet the required commercial terms.”
Zak Brown, CEO of McLaren, was supportive of Andretti’s entry but refrained from entering the debate when asked if the criteria for rejection were truly fair.
“The decision has been made, F1 has laid out the criteria, and they’ve made their decision.”
“We are solely focused on our own racing team and continuing with the season.”
