Esteban Ocon remains dedicated to Alpine F1 despite a challenging season, believing consistent performance will open future opportunities.
Esteban Ocon is not ready to discuss his future yet, despite indications that he may leave Alpine F1 at the end of the season. For now, he is focused on improving his team’s performance after a challenging start to the season, believing that strong results will open doors if he decides to move on.
“We are progressing at the moment. You know, we are improving step by step, little by little. But yes, I think you are prompting me to address the future. But yes, I am mainly concentrating on what I need to do race by race,” Ocon said in a press conference on Thursday.
“I try to optimize everything I can by working well with my engineers. And, you know, right now, I’m not thinking about anything else. And that’s what should be most important. As I have always said, if you do a good job on the track, nothing should stop you in the future, so we will see.”
A year after securing a podium in difficult conditions in Monaco, Ocon does not expect to replicate that result this weekend with a less competitive A524.
“Last year was certainly a great memory. But I think we will stay in shape for this year. I think we had a tough start to the season where we struggled to break into the top 10. We only got one point.”
“For us, it will be important to try to maximize everything possible this year, to try to build confidence, to see if we can improve the car’s weaknesses and see where that leads us up to qualifying. But no, we are not expecting to be on the podium this weekend.”
However, he acknowledges the progress his team has made: “I think the team has improved, but we started from very far back. We started from the back row this season and we are now regularly in Q2 and close to the top 10. So, there are improvements, but they are small improvements we are making each time.”
“Yes, I feel that on this circuit, you can generally extract a bit more in terms of driving by getting closer to the wall, taking risks. That usually pays off if you do a good lap. But for now, we are struggling with the car and we need to see where we stand in terms of results.”
