Pierre Gasly’s remarkable third-place qualifying in Las Vegas highlights Alpine F1’s resurgence after recent strong performances.
Pierre Gasly delivered an exceptional performance in Las Vegas, securing the third-fastest time in qualifying. The Alpine F1 driver did not expect such a result, even though he sensed his final Q3 lap was very quick.
“It’s incredible; we didn’t think a top-three in qualifying was possible. It was an amazing lap, especially on this circuit where you’re flirting with the walls everywhere. There’s so much adrenaline and excitement,” said Gasly. “I knew it was a good lap, but when they told me on the radio we were third, I was really happy.”
“I was starting to feel cold in the car before Q3 because we waited for a long time, and I just wanted to get going! We had a good first run, but that final lap on fresh tires was the one that mattered, and I managed to deliver a very strong one. It’s an incredible moment for the team after the double podium in Brazil.”
Esteban Ocon, meanwhile, did not make it past Q2, expressing surprise at wheelspin issues absent from Gasly’s car. He lamented that his strong lap wasn’t enough to reach Q3, which he felt was well within his reach, as he explained to Canal+.
“I was happy with my lap; it was very good, and I should have easily been in Q3. We need to keep pushing. The car’s performance will matter less tomorrow due to significant degradation, and managing that will be key, so we’ll see if we can benefit from it,” noted the Frenchman, who aims to fight for a top-10 finish.
“I hope we can battle for points, have a clean race with minimal degradation, and climb up the order. For now, the pace we have doesn’t deserve points, so we’ll need external factors beyond just speed.”
