Pierre Gasly opens up on Alpine’s rollercoaster season, highlighting the brutal midfield fight where milliseconds decide who advances or falls.
It’s been a turbulent start to the season for Alpine F1. While there have been flashes of promise, the team has only managed a single points finish so far, Pierre Gasly’s seventh place in Bahrain.
So where does the A525 really stand? Gasly was asked just that ahead of the Miami Grand Prix.
“The midfield is incredibly tight, especially where we are right now. A gap of just three tenths can mean the difference between reaching Q3 or being knocked out in Q1,” Gasly said. “It’s hard to define any clear trend because of how close everything is.”
Alpine has shown stronger form in the last two races, but the start of the season was marked by poor luck. Still, Gasly remains optimistic.
“We’ve had a tough beginning with a few unlucky races, but recently we’ve shown more potential. We know we can compete with Williams. Racing Bulls are quick at times, and Haas is in the mix too. We need to be at our absolute best, making every millisecond count, and I believe we can fight our way forward.”
This weekend brings added complexity with Pirelli bringing softer tyre compounds than last year, and with the Sprint format in play, there’s added uncertainty.
“That definitely adds more variables. Sprint weekends are already tricky with limited time to fine-tune setups, and now tyre strategy becomes even more complex,” Gasly explained. “We’ll likely have to make some compromises over the weekend, especially with tyre allocation.”
“But softer tyres could bring more strategic variation, particularly in Sunday’s race. We’ll get a better idea after the Sprint on Saturday.”
Despite the challenges, Gasly sees the Sprint as a potential advantage for Alpine.
“We tend to perform well during Sprint weekends, so hopefully that plays in our favour again.”
