Gasly Slows, Ocon Spins: Alpine’s Race Weekend Woes

21/10/2024

Alpine F1 endured a tough race weekend with Gasly’s pace lagging and Ocon’s race unraveling after an early spin.

Pierre Gasly finished outside the points despite a strong starting position, and Alpine F1 didn’t manage his race well, compounded by poor pace on hard tires. A long pit stop and a penalty dropped him down the order.

“It wasn’t good enough, we need to do better. Qualifying was very strong, but today we were too slow and too inconsistent. We need to improve as a team. We didn’t maximize the car’s pace, and we couldn’t get the hard tires up to temperature,” Gasly admitted.

“There were a lot of things that weren’t good enough for us to be competitive. It’s a shame because I had a good start, held my position, but then gave it back and found myself in traffic. Unfortunately, there were quite a few areas where we weren’t up to par.”

Esteban Ocon’s race was ruined by a spin at the start caused by Alex Albon, and he simply set the fastest lap at the end to take a point away from Williams in the championship.

“Unfortunately, that cost us the race. I was facing the wrong way at the start, but I don’t know what happened. A tough race, we didn’t have the pace to recover—one or two places at most,” said the Frenchman.

“Our goal was to take the fastest lap from Franco, otherwise he would have scored two points, so that’s what we managed to do. It’s the only positive from the race. We’ll see next week where we stand and if I can get the upgrades.”

The future Haas driver is eager to test the new developments on the A524 for the final races of the season: “They clearly worked, especially in yesterday’s qualifying. There are positives, and it’s up to us to make the most of them for the rest of the season.”
