Esteban Ocon’s departure from Alpine F1 has been brewing for months as discussions with potential new teams intensify.
Esteban Ocon confirmed this Thursday in Canada that the split with Alpine F1 had been in the works well before the first-lap incident at the Monaco Grand Prix with his teammate Pierre Gasly. He explained that the statement he issued after the GP in the Principality was not intended to pave the way for his departure.
“I felt the need to speak at that moment, I wrote that statement and it was clear it was the right time to do so. I am not going to revisit what happened in Monaco, we have discussed it internally within the team,” the Frenchman assures.
“The big news is that we have agreed that we will not continue together in 2025. I have been talking with Alpine and other teams for several months. It was the right time for me to look elsewhere, I have exciting challenges awaiting me. But at the same time, I am happy to be here and to be able to race more than talk!”
Now, Ocon is not worried about his future and has several options ahead of him: “We are talking with various teams, for now, it is not the right time to talk about it as there is nothing to announce. But I will announce my plans for my future when the time comes and when it is the right moment.”
