Alpine F1 faltered at Monza, with Oakes conceding the A524’s pace was insufficient for a points finish.
Alpine F1’s race at Monza was far from straightforward, as Esteban Ocon finished 14th, just ahead of Pierre Gasly. Oliver Oakes, the team director, was braced for a challenging weekend upon arriving in Italy. He notes that the team tried various solutions to gain positions.
“We knew before the weekend that it would be difficult to replicate the performances of previous races—fighting for points—especially on a track with such a unique configuration,” Oakes stated.
“We split our strategies with different compounds at the start to give us some strategic flexibility. Esteban managed to make the one-stop strategy work by extending his first stint, and we tried a two-stop strategy with Pierre.”
Alpine struggles on fast circuits, and the Brit acknowledges that the A524 sorely lacked performance in the Temple of Speed. He now hopes for better results in Baku.
“With both cars finishing six seconds apart, there wasn’t much more we could have done. Ultimately, we lacked the necessary pace to compete for points and we are already looking forward to Baku!”
