Alpine F1 Shakes Up Oakes In Famin Out

Oakes to Take Helm at Alpine F1, Famin’s Last Race

26/07/2024

As Famin’s tenure ends, Alpine F1 eyes Oakes from F2, signaling a significant leadership change for the French team.

The situation at Alpine F1 continues to evolve hour by hour, where Bruno Famin might now lose his position. The team is preparing to appoint a new team principal, exactly one year after the dismissal of Otmar Szafnauer.

It’s hard to imagine that the skies at Alpine will clear soon, as the team seems to be undergoing internal restructuring. Besides decisions on the 2026 engine and the uncertain future of Viry, the race team management is currently rather chaotic.

A year after being promoted by Luca De Meo, Bruno Famin is very likely to lose his position after the Belgian Grand Prix, at the dawn of the summer break. Last year, he had replaced Szafnauer, at a time when Alpine was restructuring and Laurent Rossi was also among those departing.

The team’s disastrous 2024 season and the arrival of Flavio Briatore had already weakened Famin internally, but also publicly. This week, it was apparently Philippe Krief, the CEO of Alpine, who announced the abandonment of the engine project for 2026 to the employees.

Famin will remain in the group but will step away from the F1 project, and Oliver Oakes, the director of Hitech GP in F2, is tipped to take over from the Frenchman. An unexpected choice, but one that apparently holds merit.

It’s known that Hitech was one of the candidates to become the 11th Formula 1 team by 2026, and one wonders if, through this initial link, there might be other agreements to come regarding the participation of the small structure, which has numerous supporters, in the F1 team.
