Alpine F1 faces a significant setback in 2024 with the resignation of Technical Director Matt Harman and Head of Aerodynamics Dirk de Beer. Their departure signals deeper issues within the team.
Alpine F1’s dreadful start to the 2024 season has taken an even worse turn, with two key resignations.
Technical Director Matt Harman and Head of Aerodynamics Dirk de Beer have both resigned, according to multiple corroborated sources in the paddock.
They have already submitted their notices and are currently serving their notice period, set to depart in April.
It appears their decision was made even before the launch of the A524, which has so far performed poorly.
Drivers Esteban Ocon and Pierre Gasly qualified for the Bahrain Grand Prix in 19th and 20th places, respectively. Ocon finished 17th, and Gasly 18th.
Both drivers had made it clear before the Bahrain weekend that their 2024 car had significant limitations, so Alpine approached the season opener with a very realistic outlook on its performance.
The departures of Harman and De Beer are the latest significant behind-the-scenes changes at Alpine. Last year saw the team’s principal, Otmar Szafnauer, and sporting director, Alan Permane, lose their positions in a major reorganization. Pat Fry also left his role as technical director of his own accord, while Laurent Rossi was forced out as CEO.
Harman, a former Mercedes employee, had been with Alpine for five years, while De Beer had returned to the team in 2019.
