Alpine F1 Eyes Schumacher and Bottas for 2024

18/05/2024

Alpine F1’s Bruno Famin confirms Mick Schumacher and Valtteri Bottas as potential options for 2024, with many drivers showing interest in joining the French team.

Alpine F1 team principal Bruno Famin has confirmed that Mick Schumacher is indeed an option for the Enstone-based team next season, with Esteban Ocon and Pierre Gasly out of contract and negotiating with their team like others.

There could be significant changes at Alpine next year, as Didier Coton, the manager of Valtteri Bottas, has also spent a lot of time talking with Famin.

Schumacher has been without a Formula 1 seat since Haas chose not to renew the German’s contract at the end of the 2022 season. The son of the seven-time world champion has been a reserve driver for Mercedes since his departure from Haas and is racing for Alpine this year in the Hypercar category in the WEC.

“It’s certainly one of the possibilities,” Famin confirmed in Imola.

“Like many, many other drivers.”

While Alpine’s results in F1 and WEC have been disappointing so far this year, Schumacher’s “superb attitude” has been praised by Famin.

“Mick is doing an amazing job in endurance racing. What’s very impressive is his mindset.”

“Of course, he’s fast, but I think everyone knows he’s fast. It’s not always useful to set a very good lap time because there’s the BoP (Balance of Performance) to consider, so we need to be a bit cautious with pure performance.”

“The issue is not evaluating the driver’s pure performance, but where Mick has been really incredible is in his adaptation to the endurance mindset. We used to say that single-seater drivers are selfish.”

“Mick, from the first minute, has been very, very cooperative, truly helpful to his teammates.”

“He is ready to learn everything, especially about endurance. A superb, superb team spirit.”
