Gasly: Changes at Viry ‘Very Difficult’ for Those Affected

17/10/2024

Pierre Gasly describes Viry changes as ‘very difficult’ and thanks the factory staff for their decades of hard work.

Pierre Gasly has been questioned about the end of Formula 1 activities at Viry-Châtillon and the impact this will have on the factory itself, as well as on Alpine F1, which will have to contend with a customer engine from 2026—a situation currently working very well for McLaren.

“It’s obviously a very difficult decision. At our level, as drivers, we’re not involved in these decisions. We’ve seen that it was very tough for all the people involved. There are emotions; I’m French, I know most of the people who work at Viry,” Gasly stated.

“I’m sure it was very hard to accept. McLaren has shown potential as a customer team—did that play a part? I don’t know. I focus on myself, on my car, the team, and I thank all the people who have worked hard for years and decades to bring all the success to this team.”

Gasly, who will have the only Alpine upgrades this weekend, also commented on Daniel Ricciardo no longer being in the paddock. The Frenchman acknowledged that it would be a loss for the close-knit driver community.

“I like Daniel as a driver, but also as a human being in the paddock. He has a brilliant and unique personality; he always has the knack of making jokes in briefings or in GPDA meetings. Everyone enjoys being with him, and we’ll miss him in the paddock.”

“The past few years have been more difficult, and he wasn’t doing what he was capable of anymore. But the guy has won more races than most drivers in the paddock, and he has had an incredible career, so we’ll miss him. I hope he enjoys the weeks or months of tranquillity he’ll have, but I’m sure we’ll see him back behind the wheel soon.”
