Alpine may team up with GM and Andretti in F1, offering a fresh alternative to the Mercedes path.
Renault’s decision to drop its engine program might clear the way for General Motors and Andretti in Formula 1. This is claimed by some sources in Germany and England, although rumors suggest that a client engine supply from Mercedes is a far more likely option for the Alpine team, with Flavio Briatore being highly visible in the Mercedes motorhome in Hungary.
However, Alpine has not yet decided what it will do. Another idea emerging is that the team could simply reorganize its Viry-Chatillon engine plant to build a factory engine in cooperation with General Motors.
This would provide GM and Cadillac an alternative route into Formula 1, as the intentions of their partner Andretti to create a new standalone team are currently blocked by the sport until Cadillac has its engine.
It would also address Renault’s desire to cut costs, as the high amount the automaker currently spends on Formula 1 is the main reason Alpine is looking for alternatives.
Andretti might also get a foot in the door this way.
Andretti, a renowned name in American and global motorsport, has already set up his aborted F1 project in Silverstone, where well-known names like Pat Symonds and Nick Chester are currently working.
These two men have had phenomenal success with Renault in the past—and know the famous and powerful new executive advisor to the team, Flavio Briatore, very well.
