Alonso’s Painful Wait for a Car That Can Compete

Fernando Alonso faces another tough season, hoping 2026 delivers the fast, competitive car he desperately needs before it’s too late.

It’s a tough moment for Fernando Alonso, and for those who know him best, watching him struggle is nothing short of painful.

Aston Martin ambassador and former F1 driver Pedro de la Rosa didn’t hold back when talking about the current state of affairs. “It’s painful, but that’s the reality,” he said, reacting to Alonso’s candid admission that his car isn’t competitive enough to fight for points this season.

The 2025 campaign has started far from ideal for the two-time world champion. Despite solid strategy and execution from the team in Bahrain, the car simply lacked the pace to make an impact. “It wasn’t a bad race,” de la Rosa explained. “The team did everything right—but that’s just where we are.”

Tracks like Bahrain and Barcelona are known for exposing the true pace of a car. And right now, Aston Martin’s performance isn’t where it needs to be.

Adding to the sentiment, former Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo, who once brought Alonso into the Maranello team, voiced his own disappointment after attending his first Grand Prix in a decade. “It’s very sad to see Fernando in this position,” the 77-year-old Italian said. “A driver of his caliber, near the end of his career, in such an uncompetitive car—that’s hard to watch.”

Still, there is a glimmer of hope. Adrian Newey, one of the most respected minds in Formula 1 design, is currently working on a brand-new car for next season. It could be Alonso’s final shot at competing at the front—and he deserves nothing less.

“He’s a great friend, and a great champion,” Montezemolo added. “I truly hope next year gives him the car he needs.”
