Alonso faces a pivotal decision as his Aston Martin F1 contract nears its 2026 expiry.
In addition to his return to Alpine F1, Flavio Briatore continues to manage Fernando Alonso. The Italian has revealed that currently, the Spaniard’s contract with Aston Martin is set to conclude in 2026. He now faces the decision of whether to continue beyond his final contracted year.
“I am unsure about his future. For instance, at Spa, he was highly astute. Opting for a pit stop was the best course of action, thanks to his experience,” recalls Briatore. “If you ask whether Fernando wishes to continue after our contract ends, our final year is, for now, 2026.”
“I do not know what he wants to do thereafter. Does he want to continue for an additional year? The performances are evident. You see Fernando’s performance; it’s there. It’s not about a loss of focus; during races, he is always present.”
“If he’s 11th, he wants to be 10th. If he’s 10th, he wants to be 9th. He desires a competitive car. He qualifies well, he races well. Honestly, I do not know if he wants to stop with 2026 as his final year or if he wishes to continue.”
“Honestly, I do not know. I’m not sure if he will have a family at that time, those kinds of things. I’ve never seen anyone so determined, day in, day out. He never gives up. It’s incredible.”
And the former director of Benetton and Renault assures that the two-time world champion remains highly motivated: “I have managed Fernando Alonso for 22 years. We have had a 22-year-long partnership. Fernando is always very difficult to understand because he is as motivated as a young driver.”
“He is in top form, perhaps more so than when he drove for me. He lives in Monaco. I know he cycles 60-70-80 kilometers every day. He goes to the gym daily. Whenever we dine out, he is very, very careful. He never cheats with his food. He is incredible.”
