As Aston Martin looks to the future, Alonso emphasizes not losing sight of 2025, crucial for the team’s progress.
Fernando Alonso scored 12 points during the back-to-back races in Baku and Singapore, but the Aston Martin F1 driver notes that the nature of these tracks allowed him to capitalize on strong qualifying performances to maintain flattering positions, which does not detract from the difficulties of the AMR24.
“The last two circuits, which were street circuits, we qualified well and then, in the race, it’s hard to overtake, so we consolidated those positions in the race,” Alonso stated. “But this should not obscure the lack of performance we have seen in recent races.”
“We are aware of this and the team is working hard. When the car performs, we are there to score points. When we face challenges like now, we still score points because the team does its job while being aware of the situation.”
The Aston Martin project will take on a new dimension in 2026, especially with the arrival of Adrian Newey, but Alonso wants progress in 2025: “I think 2026 is in our minds, for everyone at Aston, and the greatest hope with the arrival of Adrian, Enrico Cardile, and other names.”
“That’s going to be great and the future looks promising, but 2025, it’s… we need to shake things up a bit. I mean what we are doing today is not good enough, and in 2025, we need to change the pace.”
Alonso explains that keeping up recently has required a tremendous amount of work: “Right now, I’m making all the necessary efforts to just slightly overcome the lack of pace. A lot of work was done between Baku and here. Before Singapore, we were sometimes leaving the computer at 2 AM.”
“We’ve increased the workload to find answers, more than ever now. We are putting everything into it, but we see that there’s no miracle to be done here on the track, and we need the factory’s help in terms of developing the car.”
