Eddie Jordan Points to Alonso’s Waning Motivation

10/08/2024

Eddie Jordan spotlights Alonso’s unexpected dip, hinting at a loss of motivation in the F1 stalwart.

Former F1 team boss Eddie Jordan believes Fernando Alonso is not performing at the level “he believes he can achieve.”

Following a reasonably strong start to the year, competing with teams like Mercedes and Ferrari, Aston Martin – as in 2023 – has slipped back in the rankings.

Aston Martin F1’s lack of pace appears to have coincided with a personal slump for Alonso.

In 14 races, Alonso has been outperformed five times by Lance Stroll – this only happened three times throughout the entire 2023 season.

Alonso remains comfortably ahead in the standings, but it’s not as clear-cut as last year. Consequently, Jordan has questioned the two-time world champion’s performances in recent races, detecting a sense of demotivation due to his team’s performance.

“We see exactly with Alonso where, at the start of the year, he was superb. At the moment, I’m not sure where he will end up and whether he will actually be in the top 10 at the end of the driver’s championship.”

“It so happens that he drove well in Belgium, earning more points for Aston, but at the same time, he is far from the level he thinks he can reach.”

“Because, for him, he is every bit as good as Lewis [Hamilton].”

“He expected to be able to compete with Lewis this year and to be honest, that hasn’t happened, and you can’t see that happening for the rest of this year.”

“So I think also, psychologically, what’s going on in the heads of these guys.”

“Alonso expected better and seems to be losing motivation. He speaks little, he becomes sharper in his interviews, these are unmistakable signs in him… and there’s still a year with these rules before the big gamble of 2026 on which Aston Martin is placing a lot of bets.”
