Fernando Alonso approaches the season’s first qualifying with a blend of caution and optimism, backed by a solid initial performance despite uncertainties about the team’s competitive standing.
Fernando Alonso remains cautious ahead of the season’s first qualifying, but the Aston Martin F1 driver had a constructive first day. However, despite finishing third this Friday, he believes his team is not as well-positioned as in 2023.
“It was okay, we don’t know what the others are doing but we followed our program. We learned about the car in FP2 with fuel and some setup changes we were happy with. We’ll see tomorrow in qualifying and it’s the same for everyone,” says the Spaniard.
“It’s hard to read, I’m surprised we’re so high in the standings but everything can change with the fuel load. We need to find performance, we were in a better position a year ago but I’m happy, and positive before qualifying. The season is long and we also need to think about the upcoming races.”
In the other AMR24, Lance Stroll is pleased with the progress made between today’s two sessions:
“We made progress in FP2, the car seemed good and we’ll see what we can do tomorrow.”
The Canadian is now waiting for qualifying to see what pace they have: “I haven’t looked at the pace on the long runs but the car seems good. We’ll know more tomorrow in qualifying and on Saturday in the race.”
