Alonso’s 5th Place in Saudi GP Amidst Strategy Play

09/03/2024

Fernando Alonso secures fifth at the Saudi GP, focusing on strategy over speed, hinting at a tight competition ahead.

Fernando Alonso finished fifth at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, trailing behind Oscar Piastri whom he was never able to overtake. However, the Aston Martin F1 driver moderates the Australian’s result, stating that the McLaren was not better than his AMR24 during the race.

“He couldn’t get past Lewis for many laps, McLaren was a bit slow in a straight line, just like us, we’re in the same league. I couldn’t keep up with Oscar’s pace, and Lando was faster too,” indicates the two-time world champion.

Alonso believes he would have finished behind Lewis Hamilton and Lando Norris had they had a normal strategy: “With the safety car, one McLaren stopped, not the other, and it was the same at Mercedes. Lando and Lewis had their own strategy today, and we capitalized on that.”

Thus, he does not underestimate the road ahead: “Red Bull and Ferrari are ahead of everyone, then there’s McLaren and Mercedes, then Aston in fifth, but closer to the front than to the pack. We’re chasing the top 4 and hoping to make a step forward in Australia.”

Lance Stroll ended his race after a few laps following an accident: “A disappointing way to conclude a good weekend. I pushed very hard in the early laps, the cars around us were definitely faster and the tires were already struggling.”

“I was trying to create a gap and hit the wall. There are positives to take away, the team scored points in both races and we believe there’s more pace to unlock in the car. I’m already looking forward to Australia, it’s a race and a country I really like and I’m sure we can regain our momentum.”
