Aston Martin F1 strategizes for future success, focusing on overcoming current race challenges, says Alonso.
Fernando Alonso acknowledges that Aston Martin F1 is currently just scraping for points. The two-time world champion recognises that his team must vie for those final two positions behind the top four teams while also defending against other competitors in the pack.
“We are battling for ninth and tenth places at every race,” Alonso stated. “The top four teams are 30 to 45 seconds ahead of us at every race. To be in the top eight, we need a failure from the cars ahead of us.”
“So, yes, securing a ninth or tenth place is not easy. In fact, we haven’t achieved it in the last few races. I think scoring points and making it to Q3 will be the objective every weekend. That’s the visible part.”
“Behind the scenes, we have a lot of test components, a lot of ideas in the car that we want to test in preparation for next year’s car and things of that nature.”
“Therefore, my biggest motivation or hope for the remaining ten races is to gain a good understanding of the many question marks we have and finish the season with a clear idea.”
But importantly, finishing 2024 strongly will be key to starting 2025 well, ahead of the final year of the current regulations: “Whether we’re in the points or not, we must ensure we start next year on the right foot.”
He also knows that the team maintains the same hunger for results: “We’ll see, we have to race every weekend, we are competitors and it’s a challenge every weekend to succeed. Sometimes we’re fighting for the podium, sometimes for points, but the motivation remains high every weekend.”
The challenge at Zandvoort is partly due to its banked turns, and the Spaniard elaborates on the appeal of these turns: “It’s exciting, you have the possibility to try different trajectories with more or less the same results.”
“But during the race, you can do different things. It’s a unique turn, you enter the turn at a speed you don’t believe you can maintain, but at some point, the car will turn thanks to the banking, so it’s fun.”
Stroll explains why he loves Zandvoort
Lance Stroll confirms that the team is fine-tuning the end of the season, while primarily looking towards 2025: “We’re focusing on next year, but we’re always bringing performance to this car as best we can. It’s a very tight battle in the midfield, and it will be until the end.”
A very enthusiastic Stroll spoke about the Zandvoort circuit, one of his favorites of the season. The Canadian driver explained why he enjoys the Dutch track so much.
“I think it’s the ‘old school’ element, it’s very fast-paced, there are bankings, you feel the car come alive, and there’s little room for error when pushing the limits since the run-offs are punishing. All these elements make it fun.”
Asked about the Formula 1 drivers’ feelings towards the banking, he explains that it’s very fun in a single-seater: “Quite vertical! You do feel it. It’s a bit like being on a rollercoaster for a few seconds.”
