Alonso Reflects on 2024 Struggles with Motivation and Form

2024 Woes: Alonso Admits to Waning Drive and Tough Year

Fernando Alonso reveals challenges with motivation and consistency in 2024, reflecting on a season of highs and lows.

Fernando Alonso admitted he sometimes lost motivation during 2024. The Aston Martin F1 driver pointed to the final two triple-header race weekends at the end of a very long and challenging season, revealing it was sometimes hard to stay enthusiastic.

“There were a few races where I wasn’t completely comfortable with the car, or I wasn’t super motivated,” Alonso admitted. “When you’re not highly motivated or fighting for anything in the championship, you lose a bit of energy.”

“This is definitely not what we expected or predicted. We had high expectations after the 2023 campaign, and we started strong at the beginning of the year, but it seems we couldn’t improve the car throughout the season.”

“We spent most of 2024 in the midfield, and by the end of the season, we were slightly below that. Overall, I think we were disappointed with certain phases of the campaign, but we finished fifth in the Constructors’ Championship, which was the minimum target.”

The two-time world champion explained the challenges with the AMR24 last year: “There was a disconnect with the car. The front and rear axles weren’t really working together in the same phase of the corner.”

“At the corner entry, one of the axles might have been working. One of them disconnected in the middle of the corner. Maybe the other axle did the opposite. When you go through the lap and the various corners, and both axles are doing different things and not communicating, the car becomes very difficult to drive.”

The Spaniard, however, found some reasons to be satisfied with the past year: “It’s hard to consider 2024 as a bad year in my book. We completed Buildings 2 and 3 of the factory on the new campus, and we brought Adrian Newey on board.”

He was also significantly more competitive than his teammate Lance Stroll, a fact he often took pride in when comparing himself to past teammates. But that’s no longer something that motivates him today: “I’m happy, but I don’t need those stats to stay motivated.”

“I think my self-confidence will always be there until the day I no longer feel comfortable in the car. If I feel slower than my teammates, or slower than what I think is possible with the car, that day I’ll probably raise my hand and stop racing because I won’t be enjoying it anymore.”
